Low carb diets such as Atkins-type plans have taken a lot of bad press. The biggest criticism that is these type of diets are just a fad created to scam people who are trying to find out how to lose weight. This criticism is, in short, ridiculous.

Carbohydrates have been know to be fattening foods since the 1820’s. And the first diet book ever published, way back in the 1800’s, showed people how to lose weight on a, you guessed it, low carbohydrate diet. These types of plans have been around for so long because they actually work.

The fact is that there was a consensus of common sense and medical opinion that restricting carbohydrates was a healthy and natural weight to lose weight or maintain your normal, ideal body weight until the 1960’s. During that time period the “fat is bad” hypothesis began to creep into the medical literature. Eventually “fat is bad” won over public opinion and in the 1980’s we all jumped on the “fat is bad” bandwagon with terrible results. We still have heart disease and cancer, and we have two-thirds of the nation now classified as overweight or obese.

In the 1960’s it was closer to 15%. So if you Cut the Killer Carbs, meaning the refined, unhealthy carbohydrates, you are actually returning back to normalcy.
